Ben Singer: guitar

Far off, in a distant galaxy, a princess and her protector take a daring and dangerous mission in a small spacecraft. They must save their civilization from a diabolical autocrat bent on its destruction.

No — not Star Wars — because this diabolical autocrat wears a pink and teal outfit with massive, sparkly, petal-shaped lapels. In fact, everyone is wearing absurd, shiny, puffy costumes, because this is a very, very bad movie.

Modern Robot is Greensboro-based project that takes weird, old movies and performs them with new soundtracks. And for your post-festival entertainment Saturday night, they will play a soundtrack to this terrible movie, Bitto Albertini’s 1981 Italian space-romp — “Escape from Galaxy 3”.

So how bad is this movie? Let’s begin with the original title, “Giochi erotici nella terza galassia”. There is more than a resemblance to the racy kind of film you might find on late-night, early-80’s cable. Modern Robot has secured the Italian version of the movie for greatest effect.

Then there’s another title for the film, “Starcrash II”. That’s because all the space footage in Escape from Galaxy 3 was borrowed from different and slightly better late 70’s Star Wars ripoff, “Starcrash”, which stars David Hasselhoff.

The performance will take place about 10:45pm at the downtown Hyatt — enter the lobby and go to the right.

Viewer discretion and light intoxication is advised.
